ATONEMENT

ATONEMENT

03722. rpk kaphar, kaw-far'

a primitive root; to cover (specifically with bitumen); figuratively, to expiate or condone, to placate or cancel:-- appease, make (an atonement, cleanse, disannul, forgive, be merciful, pacify, pardon, purge (away), put off, (make) reconcile(-liation).

The Torah, or law of YHWH, or law of Moses, or first five books of the bible, almost exclusively contain all the references to this word in the entire bible. There really isn't that long of a list of scriptures to read. I have pasted it at the end of my short study. Some very strong common themes show up:

1. The atonement sacrifice cleansed various different things.
2. The atonement sacrifice sanctified things.
3. The atonement sacrifice made things holy.
4. The atonement sacrifice caused sins to be forgiven.
5. The atonement was a covering, and that is the Hebrew meaning of the word. This is important to know, because it is critical to understanding several teachings of the Apostle Paul and his explanation as to why faith in the Messiah causes us to be justified before the Father. Specifically these two passages I would like to bring out:

Ga 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

"Ro 8:1 ¶ There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
10 ¶ And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

So we need to be IN Christ, put ON Christ, and Christ needs to be IN us. The righteousness that is required by the law is accomplished by the Messiah, who we put on as our atonement covering. So the Father sees the Messiah, not us and our sins. They are forgiven. But, they can be put back on us, if we lose faith, or refuse to forgive others! Or more correctly, the covering is removed and the sins that are there are seen and remembered.

6. The atonement was always offered to YHWH.
7. The very first atonement sacrifice happened after Adam and Eve committed the very first sin. YHWH or Yahshua killed animals, which shed blood, and He made a covering for both of them to hide their shame and nakedness. In several instances, nakedness is a way used to describe the sinful state of backslidden idolatrous Israel. Without the covering of the Messiah, our shame and sin is exposed to YHWH and we are not going to be saved.
8. It was done with blood.
9. The command for atonement is forever, throughout all generations of Israel.
10. Atonement was made for souls.
11. Atonement was made for sin.
12. A priest was necessary to make the atonement for sin. Yahshua was a Priest forever after the order of Melchesedic. It is probable that it was He who made the sacrifice of the animals on the behalf of Adam and Eve and offered it to the Father, who made the skins to cover them.
13. The atonement consecrated things.
14. Atonement was associated with life, and birth of children. There is probably a theme or connection here.
15. Atonement was made for disease (leprosy). Sick people needing atoned for. Again, probably a teaching in this.
16. An atonement was made for the house of sick people. A connection here to the house of Israel?
17. An atonement was made for the ucnlean menstrual woman. Another prophetic connection to Israel who would be considered unclean. Look at this:

Mt 9:20 And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment:
21 For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.
22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.

Now this is too good to pass up. Why 12 years? Think of the miracles Yahshua did revolving around this number, and the fact He was 12 years old when He was at the Temple discussing Torah. It always represents Israel. In prophesy, or whatever, that is the theme in the teaching of the number 12 passages. Also, we see garments, coverings!! This is the picture of the work of Messiah, to atone the uncleanness of Israel, who previously had sought wellness from everywhere but YHWH and was desperate to be healed. What was it that made her whole? You have to love it! Her faith. In Messiah. This wasn't the only time garments were used as pictures of atonement in the Word. As we saw in Genesis with the fur clothes. Look at this parable:

Mt 22:1 ¶ And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said,
2 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,
3 And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.
4 Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.
5 But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:
6 And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.
7 But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.
8 Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy.
9 Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.
10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.
11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:
12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.
13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

Also, look at this beautiful verse in Isaiah:

Isa 61:10 ¶ I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels

And these two in Revelations:

Re 3:4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.
Re 16:15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

And this is the passage referred to several times of the garments in the garden:

Ge 3:6 ¶ And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
9 ¶ And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
11 ¶ And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?......
21 ¶ Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

18. Aaron, the high priest, made atonement for his house. Could draw a connection to Yahshua making atonement for His house (Israel)

19. In the atonement process, one would wash himself with water, and then put on garments. Looks like a shadow of baptism and putting on Yahshua to me! Also shows Baptism is not new to the "New" testament or a "new" command from a changing God with an evolving law.

20. In the atonement process, the priest would put on "Holy" garments.

21. It is blood that makes atonement for the soul, because the life is in the blood, and innocent life must be required to atone for the guilty. Why? Because the wages of sin are death. And:

Eze 18:4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
Eze 18:20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

So Torah states that when sin is committed, death is the result. Thus, we die with Yahshua (who died for us) and rise up alive again with Him living in us in order to be free from the law of sin and death (Romans 8) If Yahshua had not been guiltless, then His death would have only paid the penalty for Himself. Yet, He was sinless, therefore His blood and life had value to give and could pay the penalty owed from all of us.

22. The day of Atonement was part of a feast. It is a rehearsal and a prophetic shadow of things to come:

Col 2:16 ¶ Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

So the point is, don't let someone talk you out of keeping YHWH's feasts and instead keeping Pagan feasts like Christmas and Easter. Why? Because the feast is by definition in the Hebrew a Moed, a rehearsal, an appointment with YHWH. This feast teaches of the return of Yahshua, the Bridegroom coming for the bride in Rev 19. It's just after the feast of trumpets. And before Sukkot, another feast which depicts the saints gathered and camping at the wedding feast. It will also be at the Jubilee atonement. When the debts are forgiven. It begins the 1,000 year reign with Messiah.

23. In the atonement procedure, clothing (garments) was washed. Another picture, and reminds me of this very prophetic verse:

Ge 49:9 Judah is a lion's whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up?
10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.
11 Binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass's colt unto the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes:

Which is talking about Messiah, look here:

Isa 34:6 The sword of the LORD is filled with blood, it is made fat with fatness, and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams: for the LORD hath a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Idumea.
Isa 63:1 ¶ Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.

When else do we see this kind of talk in the Word?

Re 19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.
8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.
9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.
10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
11 ¶ And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

When does the High Priest get His garments covered in blood? The day of atonement. Who has on clean garments or righteousness? The saints. Who goes up to meet Yahshua in the air? The saints. Who is this riding on horses following the massive destruction of the nations who came against the Messiah? The saints, on the day of atonement, after the feast of trumpets, when they were gathered to Him, and before Sukkot, the marriage feast where they camp out and party for seven days just like the rehearsal in Lev 23 says.

After reading over this list of verses, and looking up the surrounding context of them, the books of Hebrews and Revelations will become more clear.

Some definitions. See if you can tell which words these belong to before you look up the Strongs. More than anything, my point in doing this is not to help educate in the meaning of these words. Instead, it is to point out that Strongs is rediculous. Find a good source on ancient Hebrew words and the aleph bet, and learn what these words meant to the Hebrews instead of what modern theologians with abstract Greek culture thinking are trying to make them say:
