Shavout (Pentecost)


Exo 19:1 In the third month after the children of Yisra’ĕl had come out of the land of Mitsrayim, on this day they came to the Wilderness of Sinai.
Exo 19:2 For they set out from Rephiḏim, and had come to the Wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness. So Yisra’ĕl camped there before the mountain.
Exo 19:3 And Mosheh went up to Elohim, and יהוה called to him from the mountain, saying, “This is what you are to say to the house of Yaʽaqoḇ, and declare to the children of Yisra’ĕl:
Exo 19:4 ‘You have seen what I did to the Mitsrites, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself.
Exo 19:5 ‘And now, if you diligently obey My voice, and shall guard My covenant, then you shall be My treasured possession above all the peoples – for all the earth is Mine –
Exo 19:6 ‘and you shall be to Me a reign of priests and a set-apart nation.’ Those are the words which you are to speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl.”
Exo 19:7 And Mosheh came and called for the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which יהוה commanded him.
Exo 19:8 And all the people answered together and said, “All that יהוה has spoken we shall do.” So Mosheh brought back the words of the people to יהוה.
Exo 19:9 And יהוה said to Mosheh, “See, I am coming to you in the thick cloud, so that the people hear when I speak with you, and believe you forever.” And Mosheh reported the words of the people to יהוה.
Exo 19:10 And יהוה said to Mosheh, “Go to the people and set them apart today and tomorrow. And they shall wash their garments,
Exo 19:11 and shall be prepared by the third day. For on the third day יהוה shall come down upon Mount Sinai before the eyes of all the people.
Exo 19:12 “And you shall make a border for the people all around, saying, ‘Take heed to yourselves that you do not go up to the mountain or touch the border of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall certainly be put to death.
Exo 19:13 ‘Not a hand is to touch it, but he shall certainly be stoned or shot with an arrow, whether man or beast, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds long, let them come near the mountain.”
Exo 19:14 And Mosheh came down from the mountain to the people and set the people apart, and they washed their garments.
Exo 19:15 And he said to the people, “Be prepared by the third day. Do not come near a wife.”
Exo 19:16 And it came to be, on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain. And the sound of the ram’s horn was very loud, and all the people who were in the camp trembled.
Exo 19:17 And Mosheh brought the people out of the camp to meet with Elohim, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.
Exo 19:18 And Mount Sinai was in smoke, all of it, because יהוה descended upon it in fire. And its smoke went up like the smoke of a furnace, and all the mountain trembled exceedingly.
Exo 19:19 And when the blast of the ram’s horn sounded long and became louder and louder, Mosheh spoke, and Elohim answered him by voice.
Exo 19:20 And יהוה came down upon Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain. And יהוה called Mosheh to the top of the mountain, and Mosheh went up.
Exo 19:21 And יהוה said to Mosheh, “Go down, and warn the people, lest they break through unto יהוה to see, and many of them fall.
Exo 19:22 “And let the priests who come near יהוה set themselves apart too, lest יהוה break out against them.”
Exo 19:23 And Mosheh said to יהוה, “The people are not able to come up to Mount Sinai, for You warned us, saying, ‘Make a border around the mountain and set it apart.’ ”
Exo 19:24 And יהוה said to him, “Come, go down and then come up, you and Aharon with you. But do not let the priests and the people break through to come up to יהוה, lest He break out against them.”
Exo 19:25 And Mosheh went down to the people and spoke to them.

Some time spent researching the Hebrew wedding traditions reveals some things about Mt Sinai, which followed the first Passover and was the first Shavuot. Here is a brief overview of the Jewish / Hebrew wedding from Aish.com. I'm going to put some things in bold and come back after the article and make some observations on those statements. You will probably be making the connections as you read before you get to my comments. : )
A traditional Jewish wedding is full of meaningful rituals, symbolizing the beauty of the relationship of husband and wife, as well as their obligations to each other and to the Jewish people.
The following guide explains the beauty and joy of these the Jewish wedding traditions.
The Wedding Day
The dawning wedding day heralds the happiest and holiest day of one's life. This day is considered a personal Yom Kippur for the chatan (Hebrew for groom) and kallah (bride), for on this day all their past mistakes are forgiven as they merge into a new, complete soul.
As on Yom Kippur, both the chatan and kallah fast (in this case, from dawn until after the completion of the marriage ceremony). And at the ceremony, the chatan wears a kittel, the traditional white robe worn on Yom Kippur.
[Sefardim do not have the custom to fast and wear a kittel.]
Kabbalat Panim
It is customary for the chatan and kallah not to see each other for one week preceding the wedding. This increases the anticipation and excitement of the event. Therefore, prior to the wedding ceremony, the chatan and kallah greet guests separately. This is called "Kabbalat Panim."
Jewish tradition likens the couple to a queen and king. The kallah will be seated on a "throne" to receive her guests, while the chatan is surrounded by guests who sing and toast him.
At this time there is an Ashkenazi tradition for the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom to stand together and break a plate. The reason is to show the seriousness of the commitment -- just as a plate can never be fully repaired, so too a broken relationship can never be fully repaired.
Next comes the badeken, the veiling of the kallah by the chatan. The veil symbolizes the idea of modesty and conveys the lesson that however attractive physical appearances may be, the soul and character are paramount. It is reminiscent of Rebecca covering her face before marrying Isaac (Genesis ch. 29).
The Ashkenazi custom is that the chatan, accompanied by family and friends, proceeds to where the kallah is seated and places the veil over her face. This signals the groom's commitment to clothe and protect his wife.
The wedding ceremony takes place under the chuppah (canopy), a symbol of the home that the new couple will build together. It is open on all sides, just as Abraham and Sarah had their tent open all sides to welcome people in unconditional hospitality.
The Ashkenazi custom is to have the chuppah ceremony outside under the stars, as a sign of the blessing given by God to the patriarch Abraham, that his children shall be "as the stars of the heavens"(Genesis 15:5). Sefardim generally have the chuppah indoors.
The Ashkenazi custom is that the chatan and kallah wear no jewelry under the chuppah (marriage canopy). Their mutual commitment is based on who they are as people, not on any material possessions.
The chatan, followed by the kallah, are usually escorted to the chuppah by their respective sets of parents.
Under the chuppah, the Ashkenazi custom is that the kallah circles the chatan seven times. Just as the world was built in seven days, the kallah is figuratively building the walls of the couple's new world together. The number seven also symbolizes the wholeness and completeness that they cannot attain separately.
The kallah then settles at the chatan's right-hand side.
[At this point, the Sefardic custom is that the chatan says the blessing She'hecheyanu over a new tallit, and has in mind that the blessing also goes on the marriage. The tallit is then held by four young men over the head of the chatan and kallah.]
Blessings of Betrothal (Kiddushin)
Two cups of wine are used in the wedding ceremony. The first cup accompanies the betrothal blessings, recited by the rabbi. After these are recited, the couple drinks from the cup.
Wine, a symbol of joy in Jewish tradition, is associated with Kiddush, the sanctification prayer recited on Shabbat and festivals. Marriage, called Kiddushin, is the sanctification of a man and woman to each other.
Giving of the Ring
In Jewish law, a marriage becomes official when the chatan gives an object of value to the kallah. This is traditionally done with a ring. The ring should be made of plain gold, without blemishes or ornamentation (e.g. stones) -- just as it is hoped that the marriage will be one of simple beauty.
The chatan now takes the wedding ring in his hand, and in clear view of two witnesses, declares to the kallah, "Behold, you are betrothed unto me with this ring, according to the law of Moses and Israel." He then places the ring on the forefinger of the bride's right hand. According to Jewish law, this is the central moment of the wedding ceremony, and at this point the couple is fully married.
If the kallah also wants to give a ring to the chatan, this is only done afterwards, not under the chuppah. This is to prevent confusion as to what constitutes the actual marriage, as prescribed by the Torah.
Ketubah (Marriage Contract)
Now comes the reading of the ketubah (marriage contract) in the original Aramaic text. The ketubah outlines the chatan's various responsibilities -- to provide his wife with food, shelter and clothing, and to be attentive to her emotional needs. Protecting the rights of a Jewish wife is so important that the marriage may not be solemnized until the contract has been completed.
The document is signed by two witnesses, and has the standing of a legally binding agreement. The ketubah is the property of the kallah and she must have access to it throughout their marriage. It is often written amidst beautiful artwork, to be framed and displayed in the home.
The reading of the ketubah acts as a break between the first part of the ceremony -- Kiddushin ("betrothal"), and the latter part -- Nissuin ("marriage").
The Seven Blessings
The Seven Blessings (Sheva Brachot) are now recited over the second cup of wine. The theme of these blessings links the chatan and kallah to our faith in God as Creator of the world, Bestower of joy and love, and the ultimate Redeemer of our people.
These blessings are recited by the rabbi or other people that the families wish to honor.
At the conclusion of the seven blessings, the chatan and kallah again drink some of the wine.
Breaking the Glass
A glass is now placed on the floor, and the chatan shatters it with his foot. This serves as an expression of sadness at the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, and identifies the couple with the spiritual and national destiny of the Jewish people. A Jew, even at the moment of greatest rejoicing, is mindful of the Psalmist's injunction to "set Jerusalem above my highest joy."
In jest, some explain that this is the last time the groom gets to "put his foot down."
(In Israel, the Ashkenazi custom is that the glass is broken earlier, prior to the reading of the ketubah. Sefardim always break the glass at the end of the ceremony, even in Israel.)
This marks the conclusion of the ceremony. With shouts of "Mazel Tov," the chatan and kallah are then given an enthusiastic reception from the guests as they leave the chuppah together.
The couple is then escorted to a private "yichud room" and left alone for a few minutes. These moments of seclusion signify their new status of living together as husband and wife.
Since the couple has been fasting since the morning, at this point they will also have something to eat.
[Sefardim do not have the custom of the yichud room; the chatan and kallah immediately proceed to the wedding hall after the chuppah ceremony.]
The Festive Meal (Seudah)
It is a mitzvah for guests to bring simcha (joy) to the chatan and the kallah on their wedding day. There is much music and dancing as the guests celebrate with the new couple; some guests entertain with feats of juggling and acrobatics.
After the meal, Birkat Hamazon (Grace After Meals) is recited, and the Sheva Brachot are repeated.
During the week following the wedding, it is customary for friends and relatives to host festive meals in honor of the chatan and kallah. This is called the week of Sheva Brachot, in reference to the blessings said at the conclusion of each of these festive meals.
Let's look at some of the wording in Exodus 19 and see if we can make some connections.

Exo 19:4 ‘You have seen what I did to the Mitsrites, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself.
Exo 19:5 ‘And now, if you diligently obey My voice, and shall guard My covenant, then you shall be My treasured possession above all the peoples – for all the earth is Mine –

יהוה brought them to Himself, and asked them to enter into a covenant, in which if they stayed they would be His teasured possession. The Ketubah, if you recall, was the marriage CONTRACT, or covenant. The law that was given in the next chapter of Exodus was exactly that. And Israel, before they heard the marriage contract, said this to יהוה:
Exo 19:8 And all the people answered together and said, “All that יהוה has spoken we shall do.” So Mosheh brought back the words of the people to יהוה.

This sounds a lot like a bride saying, "I do". But let me prove to you beyond all doubt this was a marriage between Israel and יהוה from the Word. This is important to understand, because the role of the children of Israel and the church, and who is the church has been clouded and misunderstood by modern theology. If, indeed the children of Israel entered into marriage with the creator of the universe, then how indeed can He then take another wife later on with the "church" which is simply the Ecclesia in Greek which means the exact thing that Kahol does in the Hebrew texts, which is just a called out assembly. Not a new body of people, just simply the chosen people of יהוה. Like is made obvious here, when the KJV translators failed to use the word assembly which is correct, and used the word church:

Act 7:37 This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.
Act 7:38 This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:

Now, look at these passages regarding what happened at Mt Sinai on that first Shavuot:

As we read in the short summary of Jewish wedding customs, the bride would have a veil, like Rebecca, which was a "covering", and this was representative of the husband's promise to provide for his wife. This understanding is important as we read the following verses that speak of the marriage of Israel to יהוה at Mt Sinai:

Exo 21:10 “If he takes another wife, her food, her covering, and her marriage rights are not to be diminished.

This shows the connection in the Word of the Jewish custom of the covering and what it signifies. It's more than a custom, it's the Torah.

Psa 27:4 One matter I asked of יהוה – this I seek: To dwell in the House of יהוה All the days of my life, To see the pleasantness of יהוה, And to inquire in His Hĕḵal.
Psa 27:5 For in the day of evil He hides me in His booth; In the covering of His Tent He hides me; On a rock He raises me up.
Psa 27:6 And now my head is lifted up above my enemies all around me; And I offer in His Tent with shouts of joy; I sing, yea, I sing praises to יהוה.

See all the connections to the customs we read? Joy at the feast, singing to the groom, the covering (signifying providence and protection for the bride), and the house for the new couple.

This next passage clearly shows how the God of the Universe understood Mt Sinai and the exodus and should stop all argument over what Mt Sinai was:

Eze 16:1 Again the word of יהוה came to me, saying,
Eze 16:2 “Son of man, make known to Yerushalayim her abominations,
Eze 16:3 and say, ‘Thus said the Master יהוה to Yerushalayim, “Your origin and your birth are from the land of Kenaʽan. Your father was an Amorite and your mother a Ḥittite.
Eze 16:4 “As for your birth, on the day you were born your navel cord was not cut, nor were you washed in water for cleansing, and you were not rubbed with salt at all, nor wrapped in cloth at all.
Eze 16:5 “No eye felt sorry for you, to do any of these for you, to have compassion on you. But you were thrown out into the open field, to the loathing of your life on the day you were born.
Eze 16:6 “Then I passed by you and saw you trampled down in your own blood, and I said to you in your blood, ‘Live!’ And I said to you in your blood, ‘Live!’
Eze 16:7 “I have let you grow like a plant in the field. And you are grown and are great, and you come in the finest ornaments. – breasts were formed, your hair grew, and you were naked and bare.
Eze 16:8 “Again I passed by you and looked upon you and saw that your time was the time of love. And I spread My skirt over you and covered your nakedness. And I swore an oath to you and entered into a covenant with you, and you became Mine,” declares the Master יהוה.
Eze 16:9 “And I washed you in water, and I washed off your blood, and I anointed you with oil.
Eze 16:10 “And I dressed you in embroidered work and gave you sandals of leather. And I wrapped you in fine linen and covered you with silk.
Eze 16:11 “And I adorned you with ornaments, and I put bracelets on your wrists, and a chain on your neck.
Eze 16:12 “And I put a ring on your nose, and earrings in your ears, and a crown of adorning on your head.
Eze 16:13 “Thus you were adorned with gold and silver, and your dress was of fine linen, and silk, and embroidered cloth. You ate fine flour, and honey, and oil. And you were exceedingly pretty, and became fit for royalty.
Eze 16:14 “And your name went out among the nations because of your loveliness, for it was perfect, by My splendour which I had put on you,” declares the Master יהוה.
Eze 16:15 “But you trusted in your own loveliness, and whored because of your name, and poured out your whorings on everyone passing by who would have it.

Notice again the items of the Jewish wedding traditions: the covering, the oath and covenant, and the adorning with jewelry.

This is very interesting. We have a very important event in history recorded in the book of Ruth, which has several pictures of Messiah and the marriage that will take place. The story of Ruth is in the season of Shavout, where they were gathering in the crop before the feast. Notice this passage and see the types of Ruth as the church (Israel) and Boaz as the type of Messiah. This is a beautiful picture, because it points to the salvation of the nations as they become part of the family of Israel by marriage to the Lamb, Messiah. With our understanding of the covering, in Torah and the Jewish customs, look at this previously crazy action Ruth takes. Now it makes sense what was happening and the picture is very vivid:

Rth 3:1 And Naʽomi her mother-in-law said to her, “My daughter, should I not seek rest for you, so that it is well with you?
Rth 3:2 “And now, is not Boʽaz, with whose young women you have been, our relative? See, he is winnowing barley tonight at the threshing-floor.
Rth 3:3 “And, you shall bathe and anoint yourself, and put your garments on and go down to the threshing-floor. Do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking.
Rth 3:4 “And it shall be, when he lies down, that you shall notice the place where he lies, and shall go in and uncover his feet, and lie down. And let him make known to you what you should do.”
Rth 3:5 And she said to her, “All that you say to me, I do.”
Rth 3:6 And she went down to the threshing-floor and did according to all that her mother-in-law instructed her.
Rth 3:7 And Boʽaz ate and drank, and his heart was glad, and he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain. And she came softly and uncovered his feet, and lay down.
Rth 3:8 And it came to be at midnight that the man was startled, and turned himself, and saw a woman lying at his feet!
Rth 3:9 And he said, “Who are you?” And she answered, “I am Ruth, your female servant. Now you shall spread your covering over your female servant – for you are a redeemer.”
Rth 3:10 And he said, “Blessed are you of יהוה, my daughter! For you have shown more kindness at the end than at the beginning, not to go after young men, whether poor or rich.
Rth 3:11 “And now, my daughter, do not fear. All that you say I do for you, for all the people of my town know that you are a capable woman.
Rth 3:12 “And now, it is true that I am your redeemer. However, there is a redeemer nearer than I.
Rth 3:13 “Stop over tonight, and in the morning it shall be that if he does redeem you, good – let him do it. But if he is not pleased to redeem you, then I shall redeem you, as יהוה lives! Lie down until morning.”

The wedding garment is also of importance to note, as it shows up in a few prophetic verses and even in one of Yahshua's parables of the kingdom of heaven. But look at the items once again that appear: put on garments, spread a covering. This is marriage talk.

The covering of the future bride of Israel is more than the providence and protection, it is the atonement, which also is tied to the wedding picture as we read. We'll see this more in a little bit. First look at these verses:

Isa 27:9 Therefore by this the crookedness of Yaʽaqoḇ is covered. And this is all the fruit of taking away his sin: when he makes all the stones of the altar like chalkstones that are beaten to dust – Ashĕrim and sun-pillars rise no more.

Psa 32:1 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered.
Psa 32:2 Blessed is the man to whom יהוה imputes no crookedness, And in whose spirit there is no deceit.

Isa 61:1 The Spirit of the Master יהוה is upon Me, because יהוה has anointed Me to bring good news to the meek. He has sent Me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim release to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound,
Isa 61:2 to proclaim the acceptable year of יהוה, and the day of vengeance of our Elohim, to comfort all who mourn,
Isa 61:3 to appoint unto those who mourn in Tsiyon: to give them embellishment for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. And they shall be called trees of righteousness, a planting of יהוה, to be adorned.
Isa 61:4 And they shall rebuild the old ruins, raise up the former wastes. And they shall restore the ruined cities, the wastes of many generations.
Isa 61:5 And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the foreigner be your ploughmen and your vinedressers.
Isa 61:6 But you shall be called, ‘Priests of יהוה,’ ‘Servants of our Elohim’ shall be said of you. You shall consume the strength of the gentiles, and boast in their esteem.
Isa 61:7 Instead of your shame and reproach, they rejoice a second time in their portion. Therefore they take possession a second time in their land, everlasting joy is theirs.
Isa 61:8 “For I, יהוה, love right-ruling; I hate robbery for burnt offering. And I shall give their reward in truth, and make an everlasting covenant with them.
Isa 61:9 “And their seed shall be known among the gentiles, and their offspring in the midst of the peoples. All who see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed יהוה has blessed.”
Isa 61:10 I greatly rejoice in יהוה, my being exults in my Elohim. For He has put garments of deliverance on me, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
Isa 61:11 For as the earth brings forth its bud, as the garden causes the seed to shoot up, so the Master יהוה causes righteousness and praise to shoot up before all the nations!

This passage is loaded with things we could talk about, but to stay on the topic, notice all the language of the marriage to come with the seed He has blessed, which is clearly Israel. He doesn't have a covenant with the Gentiles, read all the scriptures concerning the covenants. Even Jer 31 which the book of Hebrews quotes clearly states the covenant He will make is with the houses of Judah and Israel. So Paul explains in Ephesians chapter 2 and Galatians chapters 3 and 4 and Romans 11 how the Gentiles are saved in the new covenant, and it is by being adopted into the family of Abraham, and grafted into the root, Messiah, who is of the line of Dawid and of the house of Judah, which is one of the tribes of Israel. So Gentiles become Israel in order to be "fellow citizens" of the household of God, and heirs of the promise, and adopted by faith into the chosen nation of priests and kings. It isn't a good thing to remain a Gentile, to identify with that group of peoples, by faith Paul clearly states we become adopted into the lineage of Abraham in order to receive those covenants of promise. The church was Israel, the bride was Israel, and that can't change with a God who can't change. He renewed that marriage covenant in His own blood with the same bride He always had, which always had a way for the nations to join and be a part of, there is nothing new here in the way the Father operates, which is exactly what we would expect when we have scripture telling us He can't change and His Word is eternal and never passes away. Please reason with me on the following passage by Paul:

Eph 2:11 Therefore remember that you, once gentiles1 (so by default now we are not Gentiles!) in the flesh, who are called ‘the uncircumcision’ by what is called ‘the circumcision’ made in the flesh by hands,
Eph 2:12 that at that time you were without Messiah, excluded from the citizenship of Yisra’ĕl and strangers from the covenants of promise, (by default then now we are now not excluded from the citizenship of Israel and the promises, which means we are now citizens of Israel!) having no expectation and without Elohim in the world.
Eph 2:13 But now in Messiah יהושע you who once were far off have been brought near ( near to what? Israel!) by the blood of the Messiah.

Once again, note the items of the wedding that appear: building a home, a kingdom of preists much like in Exodus 19 at Mt Sinai, everlasting joy, everlasting covenant (Ketuba) just like Mt Sinai, taking possession of the land (which followed Sinai), and putting on wedding garments, and jewelry. This is speaking of the marriage of the Lamb to come, and a time of living in the covenant land which is one of the covenants of promise we are now heirs to as adopted children of Abraham, who is the one the promise was given to, and all his seed. When the Creator of the Universe makes a covenant, and a promise, it won't be forgotten or broken, period. It would be foolish to try to explain away obvious prophesies like this and hundreds of others that speak of the land covenant promise in the future for the nation of Israel. As you search those passages out note how they often are tied to the Day of the Lord and end time events, or connected with Messiah.

But all that aside, we once again have a beautiful picture of the wedding. Garments of deliverance, a covering of the robe of righteousness. Which is none other than:

Gal 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Gal 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Gal 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
Gal 3:29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Rom 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

Yahshua is our wedding garment, our covering, our "atonement" which means covering:

Rom 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
Rom 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
Rom 5:11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

So, building on the idea that Mt Sinai was a wedding ceremony between Israel and יהוה let's keep reading:
Exo 19:9 And יהוה said to Mosheh, “See, I am coming to you in the thick cloud, so that the people hear when I speak with you, and believe you forever.” And Mosheh reported the words of the people to יהוה.
Exo 19:10 And יהוה said to Mosheh, “Go to the people and set them apart today and tomorrow. And they shall wash their garments,
Exo 19:11 and shall be prepared by the third day. For on the third day יהוה shall come down upon Mount Sinai before the eyes of all the people.
Exo 19:15 And he said to the people, “Be prepared by the third day. Do not come near a wife.”
Exo 19:16 And it came to be, on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain. And the sound of the ram’s horn was very loud, and all the people who were in the camp trembled.
Exo 19:17 And Mosheh brought the people out of the camp to meet with Elohim, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.

Regarding Yahshua and the called out assembly in the new covenant, there is a lot of scripture explaining the betrothal and the coming wedding. Some of those things prophesied to happen were already in a shadow done here at Mt Sinai. Look at the events in bold here and see the picture that is pointing forward to the wedding to come. Remember:

Ecc 1:9 What has been is what shall be, what has been done is what shall be done, and there is no new matter under the sun.
Ecc 1:10 Is there a matter of which it is said, “See, this is new”? It was here already, long ago.

So with that concept in mind, let's look at the picture we see here:

“See, I am coming to you in the thick cloud.... And they shall wash their garments.... For on the third day יהוה shall come down.... before the eyes of all the people.... “Be prepared by the third day..... on the third day in the morning.... And the sound of the ram’s horn was very loud, and all the people who were in the camp trembled.

Now, let's read some scriptures that connect this picture with the future wedding of Israel the chosen nation of royal priests to the Messiah:

1. Coming in the cloud:

Luk 21:25 “And there shall be signs in the sun, and moon, and stars, and on the earth anxiety of nations, in bewilderment at the roaring of the sea, and agitation,
Luk 21:26 men fainting from fear and the expectation of what is coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens shall be shaken.
Luk 21:27 “And then they shall see the Son of Aḏam coming in a cloud with power and much esteem.
Luk 21:28 “And when these matters begin to take place, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”

1Th 4:15 For this we say to you by the word of the Master, that we, the living who are left over at the coming of the Master shall in no way go before those who are asleep.
1Th 4:16 Because the Master Himself shall come down from heaven with a shout, with the voice of a chief messenger, and with the trumpet of Elohim, and the dead in Messiah shall rise first.
1Th 4:17 Then we, the living who are left over, shall be caught away together with them in the cloud to meet the Master in the air – and so we shall always be with the Master.

2. The clean garments:

Rev 3:4 “Nevertheless, you have a few names in Sardis who have not defiled their garments. And they shall walk with Me in white, because they are worthy.
Rev 3:18 “I advise you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire,1 so that you become rich; and white garments, so that you become dressed, so that the shame of your nakedness might not be shown; and anoint your eyes with ointment, so that you see.
Rev 3:19 “As many as I love, I reprove and discipline. So be ardent and repent.
Rev 3:20 “See, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I shall come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.
Rev 3:21 “To him who overcomes I shall give to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.

3. Being prepared for the third day when He comes down:

Rev 16:15 “See, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who is staying awake and guarding his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.”

2Pe 3:8 But, beloved ones, let not this one matter be hidden from you: that with יהוה one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

Hos 6:1 ‘Come, and let us turn back to יהוה. For He has torn but He does heal us, He has stricken but He binds us up.
Hos 6:2 ‘After two days He shall revive us, on the third day He shall raise us up, so that we live before Him.
Hos 6:3 ‘So let us know, let us pursue to know יהוה. His going forth is as certain as the morning. And He comes to us like the rain, like the latter rain watering the earth.’

The earth has a 7,000 year plan, the last day or thousand years is explained in Rev 20, where we literally reign on the earth with Messiah in His restored kingdom, where He reigns on the literal throne of Dawid in the covenant land, which is the literal completion to a literal promise and everlasting covenant given to Abraham for the land, and Dawid for the descendant who would reign forever on his throne. Again, God doesn't break promises, and those were covenants made He won't forget about, even if theologians who inherited anti-Jewish sentiments from their forefathers have chosen to overlook the unbreakable, unchangeable promises of God Himself.

In this one day equals a thousand years concept, let's notice something. Messiah came in the "midst of the week" just like Daniel said He would, as He showed up just at the close of the third day, the third millennium. The fourth day turned during His lifetime on the earth. Since He ascended to reign in the spiritual kingdom, waiting for His enemies to be put under His footstool, we have seen the passing of two days, or two thousand years. The thousand year reign is the sabbath day, the thousand years of rest, when Satan is bound and Messiah reigns the nations with a rod of iron and His people have rest from their enemies. Also, we rise with the new body, or if we are alive we get transformed in the twinkling of an eye. That means that we won't sin, and will have the heart of flesh spoken of in Ezekiel 36. It will be a rest from the battle against the flesh that Paul wrote of in Romans 7.

Also note that always surrounding the Messiah is the overwhelmingly obvious theme of the third day. He rose on the third day. He came on the third millennium (or third day). But look at another three day connection. From the 4th day, or fourth millennium, to the seventh day, or seventh millennium, is three days, or three thousand years. This is the three days that Messiah is King. At the close of the thousand year reign He delivers the kingdom up to the Father and the heavens and earth are renewed and restored to incorruptible and eternal perfect creation, with the massive cube shaped New Jerusalem coming down out of heaven and landing on the new earth. So notice a prophesy in Hosea we just read. Just like Messiah was raised on the third day, so will Israel be raised. The dry bones in Ezekiel 37. The ingathering of the scattered tribes and all the nations who join to the house of God. Whatever happens to Messiah has happened to Israel. Because for a large part Messiah had to take on the punishments given to Israel. He took on the punishment of the adulterous wife, as Israel was the adulterous wife who broke the marriage covenant. He bore their sins and their punishments. I have a study of this on the blog about what was nailed to the cross. This being the case, we can expect Israel to be revived on the third day, the beginning of the seventh day, the last millennium. Which is anytime soon, as we are fast approaching the end of the sixth day (6,000 years). The seven day = seven thousand years can also be seen in Genesis 1:1 in the Hebrew text which is comprised of seven words, the middle word being the Aleph and the Tav, or the first and the last letters of the Hebrew Alphabet. That two letter Hebrew word points to Messiah and has a meaning of "a sign". So the point is, BE READY FOR THE THIRD DAY, just like Mt Sinai points to.

4. In the sight of all the people, who tremble and fear:

Rev 6:12 And I looked when He opened the sixth seal and saw a great earthquake came to be. And the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood.
Rev 6:13 And the stars of the heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its unripe figs, being shaken by a strong wind.
Rev 6:14 And heaven departed like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place.
Rev 6:15 And the sovereigns of the earth, and the great ones, and the rich ones, and the commanders, and the mighty, and every slave and every free one, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains,
Rev 6:16 and said to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him sitting on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb,
Rev 6:17 because the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”

Isa 33:2 O יהוה, show us favour, for we have waited for You. Be their arm every morning, our deliverance also in time of distress.
Isa 33:3 At the noise of the rumbling the people shall flee. When You lift Yourself up, the gentiles shall be scattered.
Isa 33:4 And Your plunder shall be gathered like the gathering of the caterpillar; as locusts rush about, they rush upon them.
Isa 33:5 יהוה is exalted, for He dwells on high; He has filled Tsiyon with right-ruling and righteousness.
Isa 33:6 And He shall be the trustworthiness of your times, a wealth of deliverance, wisdom and knowledge. The fear of יהוה – that is His treasure.
Isa 33:7 See, their brave ones shall cry outside, the messengers of peace weep bitterly.
Isa 33:8 The highways shall be deserted, the wayfaring man shall have ceased. He has broken the covenant, he has despised the cities, he respected no man.
Isa 33:9 The earth shall mourn and languish, Leḇanon shall be ashamed. Sharon shall be withered like a desert, and Bashan and Karmel be shaking.
Isa 33:10 “Now I rise up,” declares יהוה. “Now I am exalted, now I am lifted up.
Isa 33:11 “You conceive chaff, you bring forth stubble, your spirit devours you like fire.
Isa 33:12 “And peoples shall be like the burnings of lime, like thorns cut up they are burned in the fire.
Isa 33:13 “You who are afar off, hear what I shall do; and you who are near, know My might.”
Isa 33:14 Sinners in Tsiyon shall be afraid; trembling shall grip the defiled ones, “Who of us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who of us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?”
Isa 33:15 He who walks righteously and speaks what is straight, he who rejects the gain of oppressions, who keeps his hands from accepting bribes, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, and shuts his eyes from seeing evil –
Isa 33:16 he shall inhabit the heights; strongholds of rocks be his refuge. His bread shall be given him, his water be steadfast.
Isa 33:17 Your eyes shall see the Sovereign in His comeliness, see a land that is far off.
Isa 33:18 Your heart ponders fear, “Where is the scribe? Where is he who weighs? Where is he who counts the towers?”
Isa 33:19 No longer shall you see a fierce people, a people of too deep a lip to hear, of a jabbering tongue no one understands.
Isa 33:20 See Tsiyon, the city of our appointed time; your eyes shall see Yerushalayim, an undisturbed home, a tent not taken down. Its stakes are never removed, nor any of its cords broken.
Isa 33:21 But there, great is יהוה for us; a place of broad rivers, streams, in which no boat with oars sails, nor big ships pass by –
Isa 33:22 for יהוה is our Judge, יהוה is our Lawgiver, יהוה is our Sovereign, He saves us –
Isa 33:23 your ropes shall be slack, they do not strengthen their mast, they shall not spread the sail. Then the prey of great plunder shall be divided, the lame shall take the prey.
Isa 33:24 Neither shall the inhabitant say, “I am sick.” The people who dwell in it is forgiven their crookedness!

5. The trumpet sounds (shofar, or rams horn)

Mat 24:27 “For as the lightning comes from the east and shines to the west, so also shall the coming of the Son of Aḏam be.
Mat 24:28 “For wherever the dead body is, there the eagles shall be gathered together.1 Footnote:1Lk. 17:37.
Mat 24:29 “And immediately after the distress1 of those days the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give its light, and the stars shall fall from the heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken. Footnote:1Or pressure.
Mat 24:30 “And then the sign of the Son of Aḏam shall appear in the heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth shall mourn, and they shall see the Son of Aḏam coming on the clouds of the heaven with power and much esteem.
Mat 24:31 “And He shall send His messengers with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together His chosen ones from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

Now to point out a few more things from the Jewish wedding tradition. The groom would sit on a throne and have people sing to him. It was a personal day of atonement (Yom Kippur). This happens in the fall, during the feasts in the SEVENTH month. This feast follows the feast of trumpets where they would blow the shofar (seeing a connection?). Then a few days later they would have the day of atonement, where they would fast (just like the wedding tradition). In the days of Israel's kings, they would have the coronation of the kings during this time of the year. Also note the feast, and the cup with wine and blessings. All these things are probably really obvious, but let's explore some scriptures anyway just because it's fun!

1. Messiah will come for His bride the called out assembly (church, Israel) and have a feast, and be crowned King:

Rev 19:7 “Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him praise, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife prepared herself.”
Rev 19:8 And to her it was given to be dressed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteousnesses of the set-apart ones. (garments clean, Mt Sinai)
Rev 19:9 And he said to me, “Write, ‘Blessed are those who have been called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!’ ” And he said to me, “These are the true words of Elohim.”
Rev 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “See, do not do it! I am your fellow servant, and of your brothers who possess the witness of יהושע. Worship Elohim! For the witness of יהושע is the spirit of prophecy.”
Rev 19:11 And I saw the heaven opened, and there was a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Trustworthy and True, and in righteousness He judges and fights.1 Footnote: 1See Acts 10:42.
Rev 19:12 And His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns, having a Name that had been written, which no one had perceived except Himself1 – Footnote: 1See 2:17.
Rev 19:13 and having been dressed in a robe dipped in blood – and His Name is called: The Word of יהוה.1 Footnote: 1John 1:1 & 14.
Rev 19:14 And the armies in the heaven, dressed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses.
Rev 19:15 And out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should smite the nations. And He shall shepherd them with a rod of iron. And He treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Ěl Shaddai.
Rev 19:16 And on His robe and on His thigh1 He has a name written: SOVEREIGN OF SOVEREIGNS AND MASTER OF MASTERS.

2. Messiah will drink of the cup with His bride:

Mat 26:27 And taking the cup, and giving thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you.
Mat 26:28 “For this is My blood, that of the renewed covenant, which is shed for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Mat 26:29 “But I say to you, I shall certainly not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on till that day when I drink it anew with you in the reign of My Father.”

3. Wearing white at the wedding and at the day of atonement, and spreading the covering (like Ruth and Boaz):

Rev 7:4 And I heard the number of those who were sealed, one hundred and forty-four thousand, sealed out of all the tribes of the children of Yisra’ĕl:
Rev 7:5 of the tribe of Yehuḏah twelve thousand were sealed, of the tribe of Re’uḇĕn twelve thousand were sealed, of the tribe of Gaḏ twelve thousand were sealed,
Rev 7:6 of the tribe of Ashĕr twelve thousand were sealed, of the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand were sealed, of the tribe of Menashsheh twelve thousand were sealed,
Rev 7:7 of the tribe of Shimʽon twelve thousand were sealed, of the tribe of Lĕwi twelve thousand were sealed, of the tribe of Yissasḵar twelve thousand were sealed,
Rev 7:8 of the tribe of Zeḇulun twelve thousand were sealed, of the tribe of Yosĕph twelve thousand were sealed, of the tribe of Binyamin twelve thousand were sealed (more on sealing next).
Rev 7:9 After this I looked and saw a great crowd which no one was able to count, out of all nations and tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, dressed in white robes, and palm branches in their hands (waving palm branches was done at the feast of Sukkot, which followed the feast of Trumpets and the Day of Atonement see Lev 23:40),
Rev 7:10 and crying out with a loud voice, saying, “Deliverance belongs to our Elohim who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
Rev 7:11 And all the messengers stood around the throne and the elders and the four living creatures, and fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped Elohim,
Rev 7:12 saying, “Amĕn! The blessing, and the esteem, and the wisdom, and the thanksgiving, and the respect, and the power, and the might, to our Elohim forever and ever. Amĕn.”
Rev 7:13 And one of the elders responded, saying to me, “Who are these dressed in white robes, and where did they come from?”
Rev 7:14 And I said to him, “Master, you know.” And he said to me, “These are those coming out of the great distress, having washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb (cleaning garments again, Mt Sinai shadow).
Rev 7:15 “Because of this they are before the throne of Elohim, and serve Him day and night in His Dwelling Place (the house). And He who sits on the throne shall spread His Tent over them (spreading the covering).
Rev 7:16 “They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more, neither shall the sun strike them, nor any heat,
Rev 7:17 because the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne shall shepherd them and lead them to fountains of waters of life. And Elohim shall wipe away every tear from their eyes.” (time of joy)

The marriage ceremony can only be legalized if it contains a Ketuba, the contract, or covenant. The connection of Acts 2, and Exodus 19, and the coming shavout is this Ketuba. It was the Torah at Mt Sinai, given on tablets of stone, to a people with stony hearts. In Acts 2, the Spirit was poured out, and the Torah was given with the helper, the comforter, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit on those who believed on Messiah, the groom. It writes the Torah on our hearts, which is the promise of the new covenant:

Jer 31:32 not like the covenant I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Mitsrayim, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them,” declares יהוה.
Jer 31:33 “For this is the covenant I shall make with the house of Yisra’ĕl after those days, declares יהוה: I shall put My Torah in their inward parts, and write it on their hearts. And I shall be their Elohim, and they shall be My people.

We are sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise:

2Co 1:21 But He who establishes us with you in Messiah and has anointed us is Elohim,
2Co 1:22 who also sealed us, and gave the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge.

Eph 1:11 in whom also we did obtain an inheritance, being previously ordained according to the purpose of Him working all matters according to the counsel of His desire,
Eph 1:12 for us to be the praise of His esteem – those having first trusted in Messiah,
Eph 1:13 in whom you also, having heard the word of the truth, the Good News of your deliverance, in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Set-apart Spirit of promise,
Eph 1:14 who is the pledge of our inheritance, until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His esteem.

Eph 4:30 And do not grieve the Set-apart Spirit of Elohim, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

We just read of that day of redemption in Revelations 7, and those who were sealed. What this means is that, the future shavout will be connected with the first two themes. Some point to a future writing of the Torah on our hearts in a more powerful, complete way. Clearly to some extent we are being sealed with and given the Spirit now, and it helps us not sin, but as long as we are in these corruptible bodies we will fight the urge to sin and not be perfect, just as Paul said. Which is why Messiah is our covering and our garments of righteousness, because it is beyond our own ability to be perfect in the eyes of the Father. We have to be covered with Messiah. When reading Joel, it's clear that some of the events tied in with what happened in Acts 2 did not all happen at that time. Much like not all of Isaiah 61 happened when Yahshua came the first time. So we should probably be looking for another Acts 2 scenario "before the great and dreadful day of the LORD" (which is described some in Rev 19). The feasts are fulfilled in each age in a more complete way each time. The first feasts were shadows, and then when Messiah came and died, He filled them partially. Even when He comes again the feasts will not be completely filled till the end of the seventh day age and the new heaven and earth is brought about.
